The Role Of The Un Security Council In Maintaining International Peace and Security In The Times Of Pandemics

International law has a cumbersome structure commensurate with its size. Unlike the wheels of domestic legal systems, which often operate more efficiently, the mechanisms of international law work slowly and sometimes glitchily. It is almost impossible for an individual in a prosperous Western society to be aware of the bloody conflicts that are the harsh realities for many others. Inter-state wars and intra-state civil wars, activities of international terrorist organisations, and the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction create hellish conditions for those in non-Western countries. Unfortunately, the United Nations -particularly the Security Council- has not been very adept at preventing these crises. Moreover, greater threats are emerging one after another, with pandemics topping the list. COVID-19 has made this truth clear to everyone on earth without exception. Nonetheless, the gendarmerie of the international community, namely the UN and the Security Council, have yet to respond adequately to these threats. This monograph is dedicated to explaining the unprecedented devastation caused by pandemics and examining the Security Council's response to these global challenges.
